THE SEVEN OF CUPS (Plus a Poem Inspired By The Barbara Walker Version)

TODAY'S CARD IS The Seven of Cups. This version is from The Barbara Walker Tarot, designed by Barbara G. Walker, published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc., New York 1986:

Here's The Seven of Cups in the Rider/Waite/Smith deck for comparison:

THE SEVEN OF CUPS: I was doing some filing of my poetry and came across an old one of mine inspired by the Barbara Walker Seven of Cups and a dream. (That poem, "The Dreamer," is at the end of this post.) I realized that working in my files takes so long precisely because it becomes much like dreaming. All those old images (many from my night dreams and some from Tarot) induce a sort of dreaming state of mind. And the many choices I'm faced with (as on the RWS version above) become less interesting. I'd much rather continue to read through all those old poems, thank you very much, than decide whether they need editing; if I should seek publication; if I should post them to one of my blogs; if they are worth keeping; etc. I see this resistance to doing the practical work in life in The Seven of Cups. This, of course, is not always negative. Dream states and relaxed wanderings are also necessary and can lead to more creative ideas. Sometimes it's just a matter of choosing wisely when to do which.

DIFFERENT OR LESS COMMON, EVEN QUIRKY MEANINGS FOR THE SEVEN OF CUPS: (i.e. the below is not intended to be an exhaustive exploration of this card; a quick google will produce a wider variety of takes should you not be familiar with this card):

At this point, any choice is probably better than "navel gazing."

Wanting what you can't and maybe shouldn't have.

See the entire incredibly rich picture, not just that one rotten apple.

You really need to focus, make up your mind. You have been putting out unclear and mixed messages to the Universe. Choose the clearest, most postive form your belief or desire can take and hold to that idea.

That which appears to be wanting its way into your world. Be sure now whether or not you want/need it, as it will be too late soon to keep it out, to keep it from manifesting.

Don't give up on your dreams or ideas, but take care of the practical pressing matters in your life for now.

Pay attention to your night dreams, they have much to offer you always but especially right now.

THE DREAMER
[Based on a dream and inspired by The Seven of Cups in the Barbara Walker Tarot]

She walks slowly towards
a doorway of flame,
her calm more willed than true.

She steps across the threshold.
Her past peels off with the sudden
progress and floats away in flames.

Fire licks at her exposure
but does not burn
and stills her heaving center:

Here, where all points are
and have no sharpness,
she dreams of a man,
who has no form.

A sliver of coolness beneath
her feet wakes her.
On a low bed, in a room of silver,
lies a sleeping man.
He shifts in rhythm to a dream
that shakes him:

A woman offers him twelve
drops of blood, one
for each pair of ribs
that harbors his heart.

Does he dream me again, even
as I prick my finger?

‘til next time, keep choosing wisely and creatively, and enjoying The Tarot,
