DEATH (XIII)

TODAY'S CARD is Death (XIII). This version is by Rebecca Carr (click here to visit her site at Elfwood) and is used by permission.

For comparison, here's Death (XIII) from the Rider/Waite/Smith deck:

DEATH: Of the three cards most likely to startle or frighten inexperienced readers, Death is "first among equals." (The other two being The Devil and The Hanged Man.) Although the Death card can can certainly indicate physical death, oddly enough in my over 30 years of experience, that is the very least of its meanings. The Death card, generally speaking, has everything to do with transformation.

An important note here about reading ethics. No matter what a reader may see in the Death card -- or any card(s) actually -- a death should never be predicted, IMHO. Like so much about life the time a soul picks to do anything, much less leave this plane of existence, is not written in stone. To predict a death, whether or not it happens, can cause the querant a great deal of unnecessary distress. One can, again IMHO, express concern for someone's health or well-being, or offer a warning if an accident or some such event seems imminent in a reading, but never predict a death.

DIFFERENT TAKES ON THE DEATH CARD:

There's stuff you have to let go of in order to grow.

Too much personal stuff is in the way that you need to deal with or lay to rest for you to proceed at present.

Are you trying to trample the new so that the old can continue?

Are you cutting off the new for fear it will not last?

Things are owed you -- either literally, such as money, or figuratively speaking -- that you may never collect. Is it time to let these "bad debts" go?

Let go of it. If you do not, events will take it from you and you may not like the way it happens. You have the opportunity now to let go graciously.

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE (X)

TODAY'S CARD is The Wheel of Fortune (X). This version is from The Golden Tarot (U.S. Games 2004):

For comparison, here's The Wheel of Fortune in the Rider/ Waite/ Smith deck:

THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE: Today's post on my dreams and poetry blog (see link at bottom of this post) has a poem of mine which mentions The Wheel of Fortune at the end so thought I'd address it today.

DIFFERENT TAKES ON THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE (X):

Everything seems to spin out of control, no matter how hard you try. "Can’t win for tryin’."

Are you using your negative experiences to justify negative behaviors in order to avoid the effort required to make true change?

The best you can do at this time of tumultuous change is to center yourself. If you are at the center of the wheel the tumbling and wild swings are more manageable.

"What goes up, must come down." And vice versa. :-D

And lastly, I understand life as a spiral experience. The Wheel of Fortune can be seen as that spiral viewed from above or below. Here's a little poem (aphorism?) I wrote about this idea of life as a spiral that could apply to The Wheel:

passing our pasts
on each turning
of the spiral,
we gather in
and move on

THE NINE OF PENTACLES

TODAY'S CARD is the Nine of Pentacles. This version is from The Second Project of The Aeclectic Tarot Community, and is by lunalafey:

Here's the Nine of Pentacles in the Rider/Waite/Smith deck for comparison:

THE NINE OF PENTACLES: This has been a very special card to me for many years. A long time ago I originated and ran an open poetry reading series that I titled "Kestrel" after the bird on the lady's hand in this card. I used the Nine of Pentacles in the Rider/Waite/Smith deck as the logo for this reading series, in which I was attempting to offer a creative space where fellow poets could share with each other and within which I could feature poets I especially admired.

DIFFERENT TAKES ON THE NINE OF PENTACLES:

Feeling incomplete, even though you may appear to have it all.

It once represented pregancy in a reading, but for a woman who was quite distant from the querant (both in location and relationship).

An "urban hermit." A person who spends a great deal of time alone, usually by choice or nature. (This card came up one time with someone who had once wanted to be a sequestered nun.)

If you are not already putting your efforts out in the world, it may be time to release them, to let them fly.

It is fine, even necessary now, to spend a lot of time cultivating your inner life. You will have all the more to offer the outer world at harvest time.
