A NEW TAROT DREAM POEM ABOUT THE TEMPERANCE CARD

A LITTLE TEMPERANCE MAY BE CALLED FOR....

Temperance in The Maroon Tarot

I ran across the above image today when searching for a Ganesh image I thought I'd placed in a wrong folder (long story). I'd forgotten how beautiful and evocative it is. I'm a bit rushed and bleary-eyed today (all this getting ready to move to California is at a very wearying stage), so decided to leave it up to you, dear reader, to see what this card has to say today.

Then I got Aeclectic Tarot's new Tarot newsletter (visit the site and sign up for it if you haven't already!) and came across another unusual Temperance image, in The Chocolate Tarot:




So when I take my afternoon break (which usually ends with a nap, I'm getting to be such a Crone :-D) I'll definitely meditate a bit on what Temperance has to say to me. As I typed that into blogger, I recalled reading somewhere that Temperance's path on the Qabalistic Tree of Life is the most difficult path of all. Which given how I've been feeling during this preparation to move I could most certainly agree with. :-D However, there's also something about balance of opposites/intensities in this card -- e.g., the RWS images of a volcano and irises:



And even though this balancing may come hard, it will. Oh, well, so much for leaving it all up to you to respond to this card. What can I say? Tarot images can be so compelling and energizing.

TEMPERANCE REDUX

Temperance, in The Fairytale Tarot, Written and designed by Karen Mahony; Illustrated by Alexandr Ukolov, baba studio; Artwork by Irena Triskova.

The Fairytale Tarot is my newest deck and what a deck it is! Each of the 78 cards is illustrated with a scene from a fairytale, some familiar and welcome, many new (at least to me) and fascinating. This is a rich deck both in art and the accompanying book, which includes the full fairytales and how each relates to the card it appears on. I'll review this deck at greater length here in the future. For now I just wanted to share a card from it.

I shuffled the deck, asking simply "What card should I post?" and got Temperance. I've previously addressed this card here, so will only add that Temperance images (in waking and dream life) have been very present for me recently. So I was not surprised when The Tarot "suggested" I post it today. What was a little bit of a surprise was the focus in the Fairytale Tarot book's text on Temperance that we appreciate "ordinary life," those things often thought of as little or of lesser import. I've been caught up in that other understanding of "tempering" (how a sword is tempered in fire and water -- ouch!) and not recognizing the quiet, deeper truths just beneath all the fuss and bother and drama. A good bit of advice to remember when Temperance shows up in a reading.

TEMPERANCE

TODAY'S CARD is Temperance. This version is from from the Mary El Tarot and is used by permission:

TEMPERANCE: I particularly like the Temperance card in the Mary-El Tarot above because it is one of the most unusual renderings I've seen of this card, and because Tiger is one of my power animals. I also hasten to admit that this liking is heavily influenced by Temperance being another of my "family" of cards in The Tarot -- determined by birth date, numerology, etc. Temperance is what The Hierophant -- another of my cards, as I'm a five by birth date -- is said to evolve into. I would hope that I will some day find the kind of dynamic balance that the traditional versions of this card depict.

DIFFERENT OR LESS COMMON, EVEN QUIRKY MEANINGS FOR TEMPERANCE (i.e. the below is not intended to be an exhaustive exploration of this card; a quick google will produce a wider variety of takes should you not be familiar with this card):

Balancing two demanding or opposing matters.

Temper any urge to excess right now as it could be costly; balance might be harder than ever to regain.

It's all in your hands so it's your responsibility. But don't become paralyzed by guilt or resentment, or by your awareness of the amount of effort that will be required to deal with it. You can handle it.

You may feel like you just had cold water thrown on your enthusiasm. Let this temper you, make you stronger, and lead to a deeper awareness of the true sources of your creativity.

The energies you sense gathering in yourself will need to be developed and shared soon, or they will just fade away. So prepare for a burst of activity.

You need to balance intuition and introspection with concrete action. And remember that this balance is a dynamic one. I.e., constantly shifting and rebalancing (think of a road down which you are moving that is a mobius strip).

Resource: Glossary of Symbols Used in The Tarot, these can be quite useful in opening up a card's meaning, especially if you are feeling "stuck" with respect to it. These are based largely upon symbols in the Universal Waite (a specially colored Rider/Waite/Smith deck) and the Robin Wood Tarot, but can be generalized to a large degree with other decks.
